Rajasthan police to file e-chargesheet, e-FIR under new laws

Rajasthan police are getting ready to revamp the FIR filing procedure. According to the new guidelines issued by the director general of police, UR Sahu, police stations must record Zero FIRs even if the crime happened outside their jurisdiction. This move aims to ensure compliance with the provisions of the new criminal laws regarding preliminary inquiries, FIR registration, e-FIR and e-chargesheets, which will take effect on July 1 under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam.

As per the new provisions of the laws, a police station that receives a complaint regarding a crime that occurred outside its jurisdiction is required to record the First Information Report (FIR) and forward it to the appropriate police station for further investigation.

The Zero FIR procedure aims to make it easier and faster for victims of major crimes—especially women, children, and persons with disabilities—to register complaints without having to go to police stations.

The Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita considers preliminary inquiry laws to be lawful for specific forms of offences and SHOs will decide whether a case qualifies for preliminary investigation. The investigation must be completed within fourteen days.
