Forced to do 300 sit-ups, MBBS student in Rajasthan undergoes dialysis; 7 booked for ragging

An MBBS student in his first year at a government medical college in Dungarpur, Rajasthan, had to go through dialysis after his kidney function was badly impacted by seniors forcing him to do over 300 push-ups in intense heat. Seven second-year students have been suspended because of the FIR that was filed against them.
Despite the ragging that happened on May 15, the college administration started action against the accused students on Tuesday, after receiving notice from the National Medical Commission (NCM).
The victim filed a complaint with the NMC's anti-ragging cell.
"The email by NMC was forwarded to college's anti-ragging committee on June 22, which investigated the matter and confirmed the incident had taken place. Following SC guidelines and based on the recommendation of the anti-ragging committee, we filed an FIR against seven accused students," college principal Balamuruganvelu S said to TOI.
The first-year student was allegedly taken by the accused to a hilly location 1.5 km away from the college campus, where they forced him to do push-ups in the intense heat, badly dehydrating him in the process. He spent seven days in an Ahmedabad hospital after being hospitalized.
Several IPC sections, such as 143 (unlawful assembly), 147 (rioting), 149 (offence committed in prosecution of common object), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 341 (wrongful restraint), and 352 (assault or criminal force other than on grave provocation), have been filed against the accused in response to the principal's complaint.
