600 marshals to be appointed by the traffic department of Jaipur police
The Jaipur police department's traffic department decided to recruit traffic marshals in order to address the shortage of personnel.
These volunteers will help the traffic police officers keep the flow of traffic in the city smooth. About 600 traffic marshals will be appointed by the department and stationed across the city.
Priti Chandra, additional commissioner of Jaipur Police (traffic and administration), told TOI, “We are running short of traffic officials. Therefore, we have decided to appoint traffic marshals who will act as a helping hand to the traffic cops on city roads. They will be primarily responsible for regulating the traffic movement and will have no enforcement power."
At present, the Jaipur Police traffic department only employs 1,100 officials, despite the Bureau of Police Research and Development's (BPRD) recommendation that it requires 4,700 personnel. This includes even the traffic volunteers.
“We have sent a requisition for new recruits. However, it will take time to complete the recruitments. We are not even sure of the number of recruits the state government will allow. These marshals can help us greatly in regulating traffic,” an official stated.
The official also added, "Recently, the traffic department has decided to increase the timing of several traffic signals across the city until 11pm. However, manpower is not available with the department to deploy until 11pm on city roads. Hence, such a decision has been taken."
